Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio Instagram – I fell in love with lāhaina from the deck of this canoe in 2021. And It was on Hōkūle’a where I stood today and cried as I watched videos of these devastating fires swallow her up. There are reports of people leaping into the ocean as they tried to escape the burning flames. I cannot help but think of the words of Ka’ōpulupulu to his son when they were to be killed, “I nui ke aho a moe i ke kai. No ke kau ka hoi ua ʻĀina”
The videos and images are horrifying. The stories we are hearing from our Maui family are devastating. so The collective grief is so heavy. And all I have is this aloha for this beautiful aina and the kanaka who lived, loved, and were fed by her. May we all find a way to offer our resources and support to those who need it most. See @kakoo_haleakala for the best way to get resources to where they need to be.
