Congratulations to this year’s Nancy Lieberman Women of Inspiration Awards: Community Woman Opal Lee, Trailblazer Cynt Marshall, and Businesswoman Monica Paul! The Nancy Lieberman Women of Inspiration Awards celebrate women who are making an impact in basketball, the greater sports community, and in the United States as a whole. Opal Lee, often referred to as the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” is a teacher, counselor, and activist known for her work to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday – something she achieved in June 2021 when President Biden signed S. 475 into law, making Juneteenth the 11th official federal holiday. She is also heavily involved in the organization Unity Unlimited, a nonprofit that seeks to provide educational activities and resources to people and to foster unity and harmony within the world regardless of race, culture, or denomination. In 2018, Cynt Marshall became the first black female CEO in the history of the NBA, taking up the mantle of CEO of the Dallas Mavericks. Worth then named Marshall as one of the 21 Most Powerful Women in the Business of Sports. Prior to 2018, she dedicated 36 years in the Telecommunications industry to focusing on improving workplace culture and encouraging diversity/inclusion. She is also the author of “You’ve Been Chosen.” Monica Paul, the Executive Director of the Dallas Sports Commission, has an extensive career in the sports industry, including numerous other past and current Director positions, a BS in physical education and a Master of Arts in sports administration, and a teaching position at Southern Methodist University. #MoyalMVP Highlight: Nancy Lieberman @nancylieberman is a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, BIG3 Head Coach, 2018 Champion, Coach of the Year, Two-time Olympian, and silver-medalist (1976). She won consecutive AIAW National Championships and one WNIT Championship at Old Dominion University, then was a three-time All-American and two-time national player of the year in collegiate basketball for the Monarchs. Her coaching career has included the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, and the BIG3. Under her leadership, the Team Power won the BIG3 championship in 2018, making her the first female coach to win a title in a men’s pro league. She also recently won the 2023 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Award, as well as the Leigh Steinberg Humanitarian Award. Her on-court accomplishments have allowed her to make an impact in the community with Nancy Lieberman Charities. Her charity has allowed her to change the lives of children in urban neighborhoods through college scholarships, mentorship, basketball camps and clinics, and racial and social justice lecture programs. Nancy’s wide-ranging committed involvement in many corners of sports, business, and community has been instrumental in her being an agent of change and success.
