I was honoured to be asked to create this @applemusic playlist celebrating the French horn 🎉📯 #applemusicclassical https://apple.co/3QHVmrF ‘Bells Up’ is an expression used by composers (such as Mahler) in special musical moments where the French horns have the solo. Putting their bells up whilst playing both makes the horns sound louder and more exciting but also makes the audience take more notice of the instruments themselves. It is always a beautiful sight – a whole section of glittering French horns with their bells up, playing their hearts out and their sound soaring over the orchestra. I have chosen classic moments in our repertoire – orchestral, solo, and chamber music – for this playlist. They all make me proud to be a horn player, and I would put my bell up for every one of them! From Bach to John Williams, the horn can portray all emotions and genres of music. For me, it is the most beautiful, versatile and exciting instrument in the orchestra. Enjoy!
