V. E. Schwab Instagram – I think a lot about fear. I’ve always had this adversarial relationship with it. I had a fear of heights, so I went skydiving. I had a fear of needles, so I got tattoos. A fear of failing to write a novel is what first made me finish one. Every day I sit down to write, and I’m afraid—afraid I’ll fail to do the story justice, afraid it won’t be good enough, afraid of so many things. But every day, when I sort through the fear, I find the want. The want to tell the story. The want to make it work. Sometimes it’s so big I don’t even see the fear. But most days, it is a quieter, tucked behind that loud and messy force. There’s this misconception that we do things due to an *absence* of fear. I’ve always believed we do them in spite of it.
