Yumna Al-Arashi Instagram – I spent ten months in residence at @sihldelta working on my first monograph which comes out early next year.
The space was formerly a multi-faith place of worship. The first time I entered the space, I found the one remnant of its former use: a Qibla permanently cemented into the floor, pointing prayers to the direction of Mecca.
It was a beautiful womb for creation, collaboration, hydration, staring at the wall, and dreaming on the floor. All of which is required for making a book.
I spent a lot of time in that space with my grandmother, Khadijah, who passed away during my first months in residence, and my great grandmother, Aisha, who inspired the book I made.
The space hosted so many beautiful encounters and discussions. I felt so much care and support from @2arah.w and @sebastianstadler.jpg. A lot of magic was made in that space. Thank you.
