In 1930, President Pascual Ortiz Rubio of Mexico wanted cherry trees to decorate the country’s capital after seeing them line the streets of Washington. Tatsugoro Matsumoto, a Japanese immigrant who tended the gardens of Chapultepec, then the presidential residence in Mexico City, tried to fulfill his request, but the winters were not cold enough for the cherries to fully blossom. So he came up with a different solution, planting another tree known for its colorful flowers: jacarandas.

History has blurred some details of the president’s request and its execution, but today the jacarandas stand tall among the city’s greenery, a lush canopy heralding spring’s arrival.
