Fiann Smithwick Instagram – This is the skull of my most recently found ichthyosaur from the Jurassic Coast. One side of the skull is perfectly preserved because it was lying in the soft silty mud of the Jurassic seafloor before becoming fossilised. This protected it and slowed decay and erosion. The other side of the skull was exposed to the elements, allowing it to drift apart and scatter before being buried.
