For the week’s House Call, we visited George and Laura Bush at their Crawford, Texas, ranch, which they visit 8 to 9 times a year. The former president and first lady reflected on growing up with entrepreneurial parents, how they first met (President Bush felt “heart palpitations,” he says) and the stand-alone art studio they built 50 steps from the house.⁠⁠

“I paint a couple of hours each day, mostly in the morning,” President Bush says. “Nature helps me think more expansively. We have magnificent wildflower blooms in Crawford and a live oak that I love to paint.”⁠⁠
