Hugh Wallace Instagram – I had a fantastic day exploring @belvederehousegardensandpark The story behind the jealous wall; Robert Rochfort, the first Earl of Belvedere, became known as the Wicked Earl. His brother George built nearby Tudenham House (then called Rochfort House), but its back was facing Belvedere. This infuriated the Earl, who promptly built this structure to block his view.
Designed by Thomas Wright to look like a ruin, after nearly 300 years it is still standing.
When a 10m section collapsed in 1991 the wall was found to have shallow foundations, so work was done to strengthen and protect it.
It remains the largest folly in Ireland.
