Pritam Chakraborty Instagram – I recently discovered that “Jhumka Gira Re” existed prior to the 1930s and is primarily a Kajri, or folk tune, by unknown creators.
The song was first recorded in the mid-1930s using Miss Dulari’s voice.
Following that, a different melody version of the lyrics was featured in the film “Dekho Ji” and sung by Shamshad Begum, music by Tufail Farooqi and lyrics by Wali Saheb.
Later, Madan Mohan Saab and Raja Mehndi Ali Khan Saab developed the immortal version of “Mera Saaya,” taking inspiration from the traditional tune and lyrics and the song was sung by Aasha Ji.
Our version of “What Jhumka’s” basic idea was to mostly use the instrumental version of the Mera Saaya song and spin off a modern cocktail around it.
We could have selected any song, but this resonated the most.
This is really a fascinating journey of a kajri or dadra finding its way nearly a century later and still staying relevant.
