Pritam Chakraborty Instagram – Mohit Chauhan dubbed Kahani’s first version. He was in the studio for a song for the JamRoom series, and he dubbed this too. Babaji is always my favourite narrator; I use him whenever it’s Sutradhar’s voice (Ala Barfi). The old version had Bum Chiki Chiki Bum as the hook phrase, which was later changed to “Tam Para Ram” , Babaji wasn’t available when the lyrics changed, and the song had to be rewritten. The shooting was in two days, and AK prefers the final voice and orchestration, so we went ahead with another voice that suited the song, but this first impromptu dub of Mohit has my heart.
Shreya came to dub for TJMM, and we were discussing “Tere Hawale”. I had always also wanted a sweet version of the song, different from the sombre approach of original film version. I had heard her sing Kalank title in an interview. Unwilling to waste the opportunity to dub her in this, we have this version. Arijit’s dub has variations and inflexions that had to be avoided in the main movie version as Laal’s point of view had to be very simple.
Arijit first sang “Phir Na Aisi Raat Aayegi” on a higher scale with more passion, which didn’t fit how Laal would express his emotions. We took the scale down in the next dub, and sang it in a restrained manner. In this reprise version, Arijit sang in a higher key and the orchestration is also the first one that was rejected as it was not subtle and did not fit the situation.
We thought in “Tur Kalleyan” the narrator should be in a female voice and one line of Laal’s thought in a male voice. So we dubbed the beginning line with Arijit and the rest of the song with Jyoti and Sultana. They came from Punjab, and we dubbed it at Yashraj Studios. I had Covid that time, so heard the recording on Zoom. Their energy was infectious. Later, Advait and AK opted for a male narrator so we went with Faridi Brothers.
