This song came out after hearing of a friend’s brother who had died of an overdose. At the time, I was living in Vancouver and seeing the drug epidemic that has a stranglehold over that city, and all the people who are victims to the high. There was a lot of sadness around the fact that so many people feel such deep pain that they turn to these dangerous drugs that steal so much from them. What came out was a song, told from the perspective of the seductive drug, luring the hurt, the broken, the vulnerable into its arms, where it will “tell you you’re not hurt anymore, and you never were”. You can “leave the world behind / take it off your mind.” All it asks in return is a “promise, to hold me when you’re gone”….
