And with that, my time in parliament has drawn to an end. There’s only one thing left to say – thank you. 📸 @robertkitchin
Big day today. Spending a few hours packing and sorting papers for the archives, and then this afternoon I give my last speech to parliament (it’s at 5.30pm on Freeview channel 31 if you’re interested in tuning in.) Lots of mixed emotions…and a very long list of things to do!
I’m very conscious that it’s been a while since I posted, and there have been a few big things happening. But today the most important thing is everyone’s wellbeing and safety – especially across Auckland after such a severe weather event. So this is a post from the MP for Mt Albert!
Here are some headline points and tips for the morning that were accurate as at 10am. I’ll be sure to post any updates that come through. Till then, stay safe everyone.

In the spirit of good sportsmanship and a good cause, David and I signed and (unfortunately) immortalised the Hansard quote from this week. If you’re stuck for a Christmas gift and keen to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation, this could be a good one: https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/art/nz-artists/listing/3909337579

Can’t say I expected this…..a faux pas with the old mic in parliament has turned into $100,100 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. My thanks to David for being a good sport and to everyone who placed a bid. And to everyone, Merry Christmas!
Out in Sandringham today to check on local business owners in the wake of flooding and the cyclone. Lots of reflection by many that relative to others, this area hasn’t been impacted as badly. It is a community that has been through a lot over the past 12 months, and I feel really grateful to have the chance to spend a bit more time with everyone.

Flash flooding in New York wasn’t going to stop us getting our vote in for the New Zealand election today. It’s the first time since I started voting that I haven’t been involved in the campaign, but popping a ballot in the box felt just as important. You’ll all know where my ticks went (two ticks for Chippy and the Labour team every time) but I wanted to add this point – if you’re a kiwi abroad, please vote. You’ll find all the details you need here: https://vote.nz/overseas/vote-from-overseas/vote-from-overseas/
The friendly Auckland Council team are in place at Mt Albert Senior Citizens Hall. If you live locally and at any point have any concerns for your safety during the cyclone, or if water enters your home, you’re welcome here. Till then, look after yourselves!
As the clean up around Mt Albert electorate continues, I thought I’d pass on some useful info from council about managing the large amount of waste as a result of the floods.
* If you have insurance, please contact your insurance company in the first instance to confirm the process for disposing of storm-related waste, including building debris, soft furnishings and storm-damaged household items.
* You can also take your debris and damaged items to a Waste Transfer station in Auckland.
Residents without Insurance
* Council have arranged for waste to be taken for free at participating transfer stations within the Auckland region. If you would like to take your waste to one of these stations, please phone Auckland Council on 0800 22 22 00 to confirm your visit. You will need to provide your name, address, and vehicle registration to make the process easy at the gate.
* If you are unable to take it to a facility, please phone 0800 22 22 00 for to help find the best option for collecting your waste.
* Roadside rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal. For the next two weeks they will take place one day later than usual due to Auckland Anniversary and Waitangi Day public holidays.
Storm-related waste on public land
* For significant blockages or debris (including vehicles) in streams and waterways or vegetation, please phone the council on 0800 22 22 00 or log it on councils Report a Problem page.
* If you need skip bins to be placed in communal areas where the storm damage has been extensive, please phone 0800 22 22 00 so that council can assess the need and provide the required service.
More information
* If your rubbish or recycling bins have gone missing or been damaged during the storm, please request a new one through the council’s online form. Please mention the flood in the “Let us know if there’s anything you want to say about this bin” section to ensure your request is processed with urgency.
* Please report illegal dumping on 0800 NO DUMP
* For normal roadside collections please visit Auckland Council’s website.
In the meantime, please look after yourselves everyone!
I’ve been VERY slack on the old social media, but there’s nothing like a good public service announcement to bring you back online! This is the back room of the Kindness Collective Community Hub. They’re a great organisation doing amazing things. They help keep 100 different community partners from around the country going with the resources they need (think women’s refuge right through to supporting those who have responded to the recent cyclone.) Right now, they’re after things like canned foods, cereals and nappies. If you can spare a few staples from your cupboard, this is an organisation who will put it to good use! You’ll find them at 5/4 Rocklands Avenue, next to the fruit and vege store (at the corner of Balmoral and Dominion Road.) I can promise you’ll be greeted with a smile!
Auckland council has released details of the different places people can seek shelter and support as another major weather event hits New Zealand. I’ve listed just a few here but you can find more details at https://www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz/flood-event-2023/civil-defence-centres-community-hubs-and-shelter-sites Till then, keep an eye on the met service reports and please stay safe!
