The greatest joy has been getting to know James and his late wife Yvonne. I have painted him 3 times during 3 different phases of life and our relationship.
1st (2015) painting captures him the day we met selling CDs in front of @sylviasrestaurant on Lenox Ave in Harlem, NY.
2nd (2017) painting captures he and Yvonne (who I quickly learned was always by his side) sitting on the street where we shared bowls of chicken soup an hour earlier outside of @sylviasrestaurant
3rd (2021) painting captures James at home exactly 2 years after Yvonne’s passing holding their framed wedding photo.
The third painting has been on view in gallery 915 at the @metmuseum for an unbelievable amount of time and is scheduled to come down July 31st. Huge thank you to @ialteveer and @metmuseum for making James the celebrity Yvonne always knew he was.
Her first words to me after seeing the first painting of James for the first time, “Thank you for seeing him in the way I’ve always seen him and sharing it with the world!” — Yvonne, you knew it before I did, and now so does the world.
