What an honor it’s been to serve the past 4 years on the executive Board of Directors — two years as Vice Chair — of @NFMLA, an organization that’s been a sanctuary and springboard for so many global filmmakers and their careers. In that time, it was my pleasure to co-lead the organization in cementing some of our biggest partnerships, stamp progressive internal evolutions, and embrace our local and international film communities during some of the most trying times in recent history. We kept going, and prospered, through a pandemic. Made a home for those who felt lost after the murder of George Floyd. Forged a safe place for expression in a country trying to find its footing in so many ways. Ushered filmmakers into major studios and international visibility. I met so many decision makers. Became one myself. And in 2022, I couldn’t contain the inspiration I’d been infected with from the film community I’d helped to lead, and I knew I had a calling to fulfill myself… To join them.
I’m forever grateful to my fellow board members for giving me their brightest blessings when I decided to take a hiatus from leadership to direct my first feature film and to finish my master certificate in screenwriting. And, for wrapping their arms around me as I forge onward in the spirit for which I first came to Los Angeles. You all have no idea what your energy, encouragement, and opened doors have meant to me. I have done (almost) all the things. Now it’s time to hone in, evolved and better for it, so that this creative cup can continue running over as an actor, writer, and filmmaker. Larry, Danny, Varda, David, Franco, Steven, Demian, Margaret — much love to you special, special humans. See you on the other side!
