She is known for her hit talk show, the Ricki Lake Show, and for her lead role as Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film Hairspray, for which she received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead. After her talk show came to an end she shifted roles into executive producer roles for such documentaries as The Business of Being Born, Breastmilk, The Business of Birth Control, and Weed The People.
