Amos Heller Instagram – I lost track of Metallica‘s development a couple of albums after this one… The rock ‘n’ roll approach of load and reload didn’t land with me like justice and the black album did.
But listening back now I am struck by how deep into Prog rock this album and song can get. Shifting, odd time signatures, tempo, and feel changes… And this part took me a minute to get my brain around for certain.
Essentially coming out of the solo they shift the entire phrase by an eighth note. You can hear how the transition back into the verse riff is just slightly different from every other one in the song, and they get back the eighth note they gave away. It’s brainy and performative, and I absolutely love it.
