Долгое время историки вели споры о том, когда же появился кабардинский народ, но конец дискуссиям положили археологические находки.
Они явно указывают на то, что предки адыгов населяли территорию современной Кабардино-Балкарии ещё в IV тысячелетии до нашей эры. Именно благодаря им и появилась майкопская культура, что в дальнейшем стала основой северокавказской, прикубанской и кобанской культур.
Предки кабардинцев отличались высокоразвитым социальным строем и чёткой структурой общества. Неудивительно, что такие особенности уклада позволили им достаточно быстро приступить к созданию крупных городов и государств (часто эти понятия составляли одно целое, представляя города-государства).
Мало кому известно, что первое государство на территории нынешней России было образовано именно предками адыгов. Одно из местных племён — синды — основали на побережье Чёрного моря Синдику.
Столица этого государства, появившегося в V веке до нашей эры, располагалась в Синдской гавани. Общество того времени представляло типичную рабовладельческую структуру. В дальнейшем синды стали одними из предков современных кабардинцев.
А в трудах византийских учёных можно встретить упоминания о первых государственных образованиях уже на территории Кабардино-Балкарии.
Император Византии Константин Багрянородный писал:
“Выше Зихии лежит страна, именуемая Папагия, выше страны Папагии — страна по названию Касахия (страна Касогов — современных кабардинцев), выше Касахии находятся Кавказские горы (Кавказский хребет), а выше этих гор — страна Алания”.
