Ryan Carnes Instagram – I’ve spent the majority of my adult life in front of the camera, which has come with its share of intrinsic reward and satisfaction. It wasn’t until a few years ago, however, that I ever thought that I might want to play behind the camera, as well — in some way, shape, and form. Over time, that vision has begun to take shape, as I’ve spent many restless, sleepless nights imagining what storytelling from another angle might look like.
I’m thrilled to share that with ‘Pure Love,’ I’ve taken a, likewise, very internally fulfilling step in a new creative direction. It feels really great to get to share with you all that my directorial debut just so happened to be on my own band’s music video.
I have to say that though we did this on an absolute shoestring budget, it was such a fun challenge to bring to life an artistic vision that my partner in music crime @vanessasilbermanofficial and I had for the ‘Pure Love’ visuals. I’m beyond grateful for the ideas she contributed, for encouraging me to do this and her absolute blind trust in me to make it happen., I recall her saying to me when we first formed the band last year that I should direct a music video for us at some point. Little did I know it would be so soon. I’m glad it was.
Special thanks to @carissajohnsonmusic for lending her basement and her hands (quite literally!), for shooting half of this footage, for doing all the animation, and for putting up with my near endless notes and tweaks as she edited our way to the final product.
Special thanks also to @bradley206 for lugging his equipment to a basement rehearsal space in North Hollywood in the middle of a winter LA deluge and working his magic on the other half of this video.
And special thanks to @ckiindarius for always offering a critical eye and ear when needed and for helping me know when to say when and letting it be enough.
