Stephen Hill Instagram – Breathe x Learning, History
Our film poster was sitting in front of this eye-catching artwork that I was able to borrow for a backdrop. The acrylic on canvas painting by David Klamen was inspired by a photograph of a steel mill in Gary Indiana.
Through the festival (@garyblackfilmfest), I learned about the incredible Dr. Bernard C. Watson. In a documentary about his life he shared that his father had the highest paying job a black man could have in a steel mill at that time and that his father later died of cancer as it was common for men that did that type of work. I was fortunate enough meet Dr. Watson and I shared with him that my grandfather died of black lung disease from working in Alabama coal mines…
We’ve been trying to breathe for a long time…
Thank you, Gary, for having us.
