Going broke so you can have live strings on track ten is a thing of the past. Most people in LA – many of them very successful – make epic productions in their bedroom “studio,” a laptop sitting next to their bedside table. I had gotten very used to this model. It wasn’t strange to meet up for a writing session and end up sitting on a stranger’s bed as they make beats across the room, while a roommate pops their head in to ask if we want anything from the coffee shop down the street. This past month, the @meganddiamusic band and I spent our time in a cozy, grungy, lived in, live recording studio in K-Town. The Death Star. A drum set was mic’d up in the corner. A baby grand in the live room. A vocal booth that looked like a magician’s water box. Tambourines and xylophones and bongos galore. Stacks of dead cases, guitar amps, pedals, and rows and rows of electric and acoustic guitars. I had forgotten how good it feels to be in a space like this. Such a beautiful, creative room. It’s a good lesson… pay attention to how you’re cutting costs, and what it costs you. Some things are worth saving up for. Keep the process fun and exciting, and know when to cut corners, and when to take the long road.
