Auntie E Story Time…..
20 years ago I was a VERY precocious college student entering my senior year at UNC and hoping to go on to law school.
As a first generation college graduate this was slightly audacious, but also expected as Gloria’s child.
I didn’t know any lawyers at the time (let alone any Black lawyers) but I knew with my mouth and curiosity, the law was for me.
So when I heard Willie Gary/“The Giant Killer” was trying a billion dollar asbestos case down the road in Raleigh…I knew I had to meet him. Actually, I needed to work for him.
I got myself to that Wake Co. courthouse and sat in the courtroom for 2 days before I could get him to stop and hear my pitch. I approached him as he (and his entourage) were leaving the courtroom…it was simple.
“Mr. Gary, I want to be the best lawyer of my generation and only you can teach me how. Can I work for you this summer?
I’ll work for free. I’ll work 24 hours a day.
I just need to see you in action.”
He asked where I went to law school.
Whoops 🥴
That’s where shit got awkward.
I wasn’t even accepted to anybody’s law school at that point.
He told me I wasn’t qualified to be a real summer associate….
DAMN
BUT…
He did allow me to shadow him and his team (which included THE @chrisstewart_esq_ ) for the duration of that trial.
I learned more in that summer about jury selection, witness preparation, and the value of “The War Room” than I did in three years of law school.
I DEEPLY appreciate the space I currently occupy in the culture as a credible and consistent legal authority.
Please know my position is the direct result of having legal brilliance poured into me by the GOATS of industry.
