A couple of days just for me, thinking about words. About Katherine Mansfield. About Kafka. This morning I watched the dawn break through the window of my friends’ hut and I listened to the birds come alive again. Thank you @charlestontrust, @sineadgleeson, Tessa Hadley, Kathryn Hunter. The moral of the story is: don’t wait two weeks after a rogue rounders ball clipped your pinkie finger and snapped the end back. Also, if you see a white thing under your skin that wasn’t there before, chances are it’s a bone. #break #snap #ouch #ilovethenhs I can’t believe it! Guess what? I got nominated for Best Actress at the amazing @irisprize! And so did my darling Bel. I’m so happy that Chuck Chuck Baby is getting seen and valued. It’s a very curious, special feeling to know that our work is out there on its own now. It doesn’t belong to us any more. Our small film about the redemptive power of female love in all its forms. I’m so proud. As I stepped outside to feed Southbank Centre the fish this morning (named by our niece) I could feel that it’s coming up to the time when I did my trip, six weeks, 2000 miles in my lovely Dolly-van. I can feel the pull of the road. This morning I woke up – snapped awake – at six, with a pang in my chest for my dad who I haven’t seen since August. I had to read my book because it was too early to call him. I’ll call him now and tell him about the prize. I can’t believe it! Guess what? I got nominated for Best Actress at the amazing @irisprize! I dicked about on the red(green here) carpet, bought a pile of paintings and drawings at the flea market by the lake, cycled around like the city was mine, got lost in the art museum for a day and ate a pizza that collapsed under the weight of its bolognese topping at the ping pong and pizza industry ice-breaker tournament (won by the remarkable @samritz, who looked for all the world as if he was going to fly). Thank-you for having us, @zurichfilmfestival. I was fourteen, on my first school trip away from home. Singing on the bus, miles and miles to go up the Great North Road to Hadrian’s beautiful wall. Bunk beds. Beans on toast. We walked all the next day, Hilary and me, in jeans and jumpers and the wind, and suddenly there it was. A great tree, sheltered in the gap between two hills: improbable, indelible. I took a photo on my little point and shoot Kodak camera. I couldn’t wait to get it developed. When it came back I realised that I hadn’t stood far enough away to catch it, to catch the way it made you feel; like a magic trick. Today, F said that a famous tree had been felled in the night, a tree between two hills was gone. it was a Sycamore, three hundred years old. What a tree. #treetime #aroundfor170millionyears Fitzrovia I call this piece “The story of my life”. Go early in the morning, on a Sunday. Cycle there through empty streets past Victorian houses that look like home. Sit for ages alone in the room with the changing photos. Remember all the things you used to notice. Say you’ll come back. Don’t come back. St Agnès. #varda Please look after this bear. #5 #specialtigeredition Into the woods. A very rare shot of a rainbow being painted – from the train, somewhere in Northumberland. This Pauline Boty self-portrait is now on show at rebooted @nationalportraitgallery. Have you read Ali Smith’s Autumn? Because every picture I’ve posted recently is of my face. I love this 1930s woodcut. Isn’t it a beauty?
