That’s what I felt when it was announced that we would have a vote to enshrine a Voice to Parliament in the constitution and be recognised as this land’s first people in the same document.
Hope is what I get from the collection of stories I represent. Stories of sacrifice, struggle and resilience that flow through my veins from my ancestors.
The vitriol and violence that has erupted through this campaign has been devastating, but not surprising. The direction I have feared we are heading has terrified me over the last few weeks and it’s threatened that hope.
But as I look to Oct 14th now, just over a week out – as I consider all the genuine questions and desires from my non-Indigenous friends and family who want to do the right thing, as I remember the opportunity this vote brings – to give us mob the chance to change the gaps that still exist and have been widening for decades, to do something different so we’re not going back to the same methods and expecting different results, to build a brighter future for our next generations – I’m choosing hope.
I’m choosing to believe people are generally good and want good things. I’m choosing not to be scared to raise my voice on it because trolls are nothing compared to what my dad and my grandparents before me have faced fearlessly.
