Michelle Krusiec Instagram – If you’re ever wondering why no one ever wants to talk about the sensitive relationship between China and Taiwan, filmmaker Vanessa Hope depresses the mute button on this controversial topic with her film Invisible Nation. Vanessa, who is one half of Double Hope Films, lives true to her surname with her latest doc. Invisible Nation gives the world access to Taiwan’s first woman president, one of the few female heads of government in the world, Tsai Ing-Wen. Breaking down an extremely complex history between Taiwan and China, Hope sheds light on a painful and invisible wound in Taiwan’s international identity, a result of China’s “One Country, two systems” policy. A policy, president Tsai has taken a bold and clear stance against. Tsai won her presidency with 80% of the vote. 🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼
I saw this film at @woodstockfilmfestival and I was given a shocking history lesson. But what resonated with me was a feeling that the film, through Tsai, captures an indomitable Taiwanese spirit, where knowing yourself as a country comes from relentless perseverance, unshakeable faith and unapologetic confidence. It’s a spiritedness that if provoked refuses to give up hope. As the majority of my family is in Taiwan, all of us pray for peace but the human spirit clings to its identity.
