Today is World Mental Health Day. “It is estimated that 1 in 4 people around the world suffer from a mental health condition, with a treatment gap of up to 90 per cent in some countries” (United Nations, un.org). I have lived with anxiety and depression since I was 12 or 13. Presently, I would consider myself a generally happy person. My depression has been ok post-pandemic, but my anxiety still spikes regularly. It’s manageable, but it is still a work in progress. Just this morning, I woke up heart racing and muscles clenching. It’s important to note that I recognize my privilege: I have access to mental healthcare in the form of therapy and medications, I have the love and support of family and friends, and I’m a cisgendered white person living in a Democratic state where resources abound. I share my personal experience with mental illness only because I hope that talking about mental health and mental illness will help break the stigma and encourage more people to ask for help if they need it. However, many marginalized communities and people in other countries that don’t recognize mental health as a problem, do not always have access to mental health resources, and that is the purpose of World Mental Health Day. Per usual, I’ll post resources in my stories.
