Augustus Prew Instagram – My heart is broken. Civilians should be protected at all costs whether they be Israeli or Palestinian- that should not be a controversial statement. Hamas’ terrorism and war crimes against the Israeli people are unequivocally wrong and sicken and terrify me to my core and while Israel has an absolute right to defend herself, that right to self-defense does not justify committing war crimes against the Palestinian people. That is not self-defense. A war crime is a war crime no matter who commits it. I am appalled that a humanitarian corridor has not been established. Cutting off essential supplies (water, food, medicine) to innocent civilians, half of whom are CHILDREN, and collectively starving 2.2M Gazans is obviously illegal and very immoral. Collective punishment is a war crime under the UN charter plain and simple and it is wrong. It is not anti-Semitic to be opposed to the Israeli government’s appalling treatment of Palestinians. I fear that what we are witnessing is the beginning of a genocide. I hope with all my heart that that is not true. We must remember that Palestinians are victims of Hamas just as much as Israelis are. Civilians are not the enemy, children are NOT the enemy. Other countries in the region must play a role here. Egypt needs to allow aid through immediately, humanitarian supplies must be allowed over the border. I believe that both the Palestinian and Israeli people have a right to self-determination and that this war will set back that very just cause. The need for de-escalation has never been greater. The need for us to remember and hold onto our shared humanity has never been greater.
