The history of oppression and genocide is one which is uncomfortable for most people to face. But the truth is that many of the most terrible afflictions of modern history are linked to the development of European power and colonial adventures. The expulsion of human beings, families and children, uprooted and turned into slaves or persecuted and killed, often in their ancestral homelands, seems to have a direct correlation to the rise of ‘The West’. And yet, today it prides itself on its adherence to a list of human rights that it is yet to apply fairly and equally to other people living on this same earth.
