Chavo Sr. was the oldest son of Gory Guerrero, pioneering Luchador and promoter, while Roddy Piper was a runaway son of an abusive father in Canada trying to find himself in the wrestling business. After the Olympic lost their English language broadcast, the promotion needed a Mexican-American star and along came Chavo, a great wrestler with a pedigree who could appeal to Spanish and English language audiences. But he needed a foil, and Piper was perfect—obnoxious, insulting and fearless. As wrestling historian Rock Rims put it, the Piper/Chavo feud was the last gasp of a dying territory.
