Humphrey Bogart Instagram – #NationalChessDay is a good day to remember how much Humphrey Bogart loved the game of #chess, and how strong of a player he was. In his early twenties, before coming to Hollywood, Bogie hustled chess games in Central Park and Coney Island for dimes and quarters in order to pay his bar tabs around town. Bogart eventually became such a strong player that he achieved a draw against grandmaster Samuel Reshevsky. Bogie played chess every chance he had, and he was active as a tournament director for the US Chess Federation and the CA State Chess Association. During WWII, Bogart played chess by mail with US troops until he was ordered to stop by the FBI, which feared the chess notations were secret codes. It was Bogie’s idea to make Casablanca’s Rick Blaine a chess player. | Posted on 14/Oct/2023 23:58:08
