On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly alluded to an “Eisenhower model” approach to immigration if he wins office.

Trump hopes to expand President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s anti-immigration campaign using inhumane strategies to carry out “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

Known as “Operation Wetback,” the 1954 enforcement operation led by Eisenhower used military-style tactics to remove Mexican immigrants, some of which were “Mexican-looking” American citizens, from their homes, sending them back to Mexico.

Around 1.3 million people were affected by the brutal and armed forced deportation campaign, with some deportees dying due to inhumane transportation conditions that resembled an ‘eighteenth century slave ship.’

At the end of the program, some reports indicate the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) deported over one million Mexican “immigrants” nationwide, with 60 percent being U.S. citizens of Mexican descent.

Trump’s commitment to implement a program as harsh as “Operation Wetback” should serve as a stark warning as he tells all other Americans that Latinos, the second-largest demographic group in the U.S., should be suspected and othered.

Trump’s plans and statements aren’t new, but if Trump wins next year’s election, he intends to follow through.

“As Trump and his MAGA supporters seek to remake our nation and our Constitution in his image, they will be coming out in full force to the ballot box a year from now.

If they win, we can expect a police state that goes beyond Operation Wetback, creating a human tragedy on a historic scale and irreparably destroying our communities and permanently lowering our leadership and standing on the global stage.”
