Alice Lee Instagram – I’ve been trying to find the right words, but honestly it’s been really hard. I’ve been processing and grieving. Crying at random times. There are so many parts of this that sadden me, anger me. Asian women, immigrant women, were killed by a white supremacist. Four of them were Korean. The police and media humanized the white supremacist murderer while getting the names of the victims wrong. Racism. Misogyny. Xenophobia. Gun violence. A history of violent white colonialism in Asian countries. A history of violent discrimination against Asians in America. Years of micro-aggressions and “jokes” and not feeling represented or understood in society, in my workplaces, among “friends”. Feeling guilt and shame for having wanted to assimilate in the past. Witnessing a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes since the pandemic. My parents telling me to be careful and to not walk alone because of the climate out there and of course me breaking down because I’m also just worried about them. It’s so much to hold and my heart breaks for my community. This was an extreme act of violence that once again shows how white supremacy is held up by this country’s policing and media coverage. But there are small acts of violence happening all around us – And for me, they happen most frequently in my liberal space by liberal pple. I urge you to look inside and reflect. Standing in solidarity with the Black and Indigenous community and with all communities of color who are constantly told by the Western world that we are not worthy or enough. WE FUCKING ARE.
