Vibrations were high last night at Local 479 where our IATSE brothers and sisters graciously hosted the SAG-AFTRA rally in Atlanta. The impassioned speakers from our guild and their union were eloquent and informed, reminding us of the true solidarity we share, the importance to creative processes and to the entire structure of our industry of the issues for which we are fighting. There are so very many contributing members of this community whose wages are outdated to say the least. The streamers have changed the entire business model of consuming entertainment and the contracts have not changed yet to encompass this new world. Speaking of, and among other issues, is of course AI. While its an exciting tool in the hands of artists, its terrifying in the hands of those with an eye for the bottom line, not for connecting with humanity. We ALL need some precedents set in consent, compensation and control over the use of our own image, in the entertainment industry or not! And for writers, my god! If you’re interested to know more about the realities and potentials of AI, @_justinebateman_ knows wtf is up and ain’t afraid to tell it. Meanwhile, its brutal to stop work. It hurts a lot of people. Lets hope those in power see their way forward so negotiations can reopen, humane contract agreements can be reached, production can resume —swiftlyyy. (Hah – the choice is yourrrs!)
If indie producers can do it, the AMPTP can do it. Lets do it.
