Frederique van der Wal Instagram – From the wonderful crazy life in the New York City jungle I was ready to change it up and dive into the ocean.
I had been invited to witness firsthand the impact of rising ocean water temperatures on coral reefs. Joining the amazing organization I.CARE with Mike and Patxi, I was able to see their work on coral restoration and gain a deeper understanding of the effects of climate change on our underwater ecosystems. It becomes even more clear to me that everything is connected.
Every day, we witness the effects of climate change on our surroundings – floods, fires, and the loss of species and nature. But to see what is happening beneath the surface, we sometimes seem to forget and it’s heart-wrenching.
However, with the efforts of organizations like I.CARE and Dr. Cindy Lewis director of Florida Institute of Oceanography’s Keys Marine Lab, there is hope.
Our first dive was disheartening, as much of the coral that had been planted had bleached. However, we were pleasantly surprised during our second dive. The energy was immediately better, and we witnessed life, action, vibrant colors, and an abundance of fish. The sponges that had been planted there were alive and had grown. Nature is resilient and finds ways to adapt and resist. On the other hand, we humans need to make changes in our behavior.
It feels good to be on the front lines and witness firsthand the efforts of so many people.
I am trying to make a difference,
by using my water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles.
To use no plastic around the house If everyone stops or drastically reduces their consumption of plastic bottles, the impact would be enormous.
I am also taking the time to understand the ingredients in the products I use. I have learned about the harmful effects of microbeads, which are tiny plastic particles found in cleaning products, cosmetics, and skincare. By being more conscious of what I buy, I can make choices that are better for the environment and for myself.
I have adopted a mindset of mindful consumption. Instead of buying unnecessary things, I am focusing on reducing my overall consumption. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a more sustainable future. | Posted on 19/Sep/2023 21:25:46
