Kathy Wu Instagram – My Chinese name is 嘉星, 嘉 means “happiness and kindness”, 星 means “star🌟”. I gave myself the English name “Kathy” before I came to America, thinking it as such a cool name.
Out of convenience I tell people to call me Kathy cuz they often mispronounce my Chinese name, and it saves the time having to teach them the proper pronunciation.
Making this short “Call Me by My Name” allows me to look at my Chinese name once again. My parents put much thoughts into naming me, this name is not only an identity, it also carries the weight of their well wishes, their hopes and unconditional love for a child.
Whether or not they knew it then, mom & dad certainly gave me a name that I forever intend to live by:
“To shine happily like a star”🌟
