Katie Couric Instagram – Henry Kissinger, one of the most influential and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday at age 100, his firm said. Kissinger served as secretary of state and national security adviser under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He and Vietnam’s Le Duc Tho shared the Nobel Peace Prize for the secret negotiations that produced the 1973 Paris agreement and ended U.S. military participation in the Vietnam War. His famous “shuttle diplomacy” after the 1973 Middle East war helped stabilize relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Kissinger had been active past his centenary, attending meetings in the White House, publishing a book on leadership styles, and testifying before a Senate committee about the nuclear threat posed by North Korea. In July 2023 he made a surprise visit to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. In addition to his wife Nancy Maginnes, a former foreign policy researcher on the staff of Nelson Rockefeller, survivors include two children from his first marriage, David and Elizabeth; and five grandchildren.
