According to @nytimes reporting, Majed Al-Ansari, a spokesman for the foreign ministry of Qatar, which has helped mediate the talks that led to the initial pause in fighting, said an “agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip.” It did not elaborate on the terms. The announcement came shortly after the Israeli prime minister’s office said it had begun contacting the families of hostages who would be released on Monday, appearing to resolve a disagreement over the lists of those to be freed on what had been expected to be the final day of a four-day cease-fire. Under the initial deal, Hamas agreed to release 50 women and children taken hostage during the Oct. 7 attack, and Israel agreed to free 150 women and minors held in Israeli jails, among other terms. This is a developing story with updates to come.

Katie Couric Instagram – ICYMI ➡️ Eleven hostages were released by Hamas into Israel on Monday, according to the Israel Defense Forces. In exchange, 33 Palestinian civilians were set to be released from Israeli prison, a spokesman for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said. Earlier Monday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a deal to extend the fragile pause in fighting in Gaza by two days, according to Qatari officials.

We’ve all wondered how the hostages taken by Hamas have coped with their ordeal, and in some cases, how they will adjust to their newfound freedom. On Sunday, I spoke to psychoanalyst and professor at @hebrewuniversity in Jerusalem Dr. Ofrit Shapira-Berman, who has been working very closely with the families of those missing and killed in Israel on Oct. 7. She helped shed some light on these complex questions. Read more of our conversation at the link in my bio.
