Lisa Simone Instagram – On Saturday, 14 October 2023, Australians voted in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. The referendum did not pass.
I had already been asking the Australian team I am working with if they could assist with finding pieces by artists of the First Peoples that I could wear onstage, not knowing of the political shifts taking place. I touched down in Melbourne on 17 October and upon learning of the vote doubled down in my efforts. Unlike my mother, I make it a habit to keep my political opinions separate from my music, however, this time I made a conscious decision to show my support. During last night’s concert I wore a beautiful throw gifted to me by Irene Fisher, a descendant of the Stolen Generations. The moment I walked onstage the place erupted in applause. 2000 plus people in attendance immediately recognized the colors and designs and knew, without me saying a word, where I stand.
