Niki Ang Instagram – After a year and a half on this journey, Maxine is in the world.
The story popped into my head while I was brushing my teeth one night. I wrote the script in my underwear. I pitched my heart out and screamed right when the zoom ended. I called @andrewahnfilms. I met 11 other incredibly talented filmmakers who inspire me and encourage me. I worked with execs who championed me and were very into us saying “gay.” I got covid while traveling and then as soon as I tested negative, started prep. I got to assemble the ultron of dept heads who brought an immense amount of talent and expertise. The perfect cast was cast. A crew of 100 shot for 5 days and I sweat profusely the whole time. I was so relieved when we cut a complete film in the edit and there was cheering after our director’s cut screening. Incredible music was written and performed. Piece by piece, frame by frame, sound by sound, it started to look like a real movie. We finally finished a film that was worthy of castle logos that bookended it. Then I went to the woods with Kelsie for a few days. A year later we partied. I got to screen it for my family in a movie theater at Outfest. We won an award at Hollyshorts. Now this film about an Asian American girl learning to love her queerness is on tv screens all over the world and I’m a different person. It’s nothing short of magic. I’ve said so many thank yous and it’s still not enough. Thank you.
