Rise to perform your duties toward your people” Deepavali, Diwali is celebrated across India as the festival of lights. But why the lights? The lamps? The lamps were lit by the citizens of Ayodhya to celebrate the return of Rama after his 14 years of exile. It marks his victory over Ravana. Deepavali is also a philosophical metaphor of conquering our inner demons that have a hundred heads in all directions. It is a symbol of an individual’s quest for the knowledge of the self. The last day, Dashami, where we celebrate the defeat of Mahishasura, the demon, as Durga overpowers him is in fact symbolic of overcoming our own inner demons of arrogance and ego.
