The @thetimesmagazine feature from the weekend, in case you missed it. Which I did. You can tell a lot about the state of a nation’s mindset by the publicity you get for a book you published in multiple territories. My book #ThisOneWildAndPreciousLife is about the climate crisis. Which Spanish and US media totally got. My interviews in each of these countries were firmly about my knowledge and opinions on climate politics. But the UK have struggled to discuss the climate stuff in my book, not in a disrespectful manner, but I think out of …fear… overwhelm, perhaps? In interviews across the board I am asked about sugar, my knickers, my weirdness, my mental health tips…but the C word is kinda side-stepped.
What is with that? I have my theories, but keen on others. It’s like that social experiment where you’re told to count how many times the blue team pass the basketball …and you totally don’t see the gorilla that walks across the court.
That said, this interview is kind, fair, acknowledges my intent and the journalist had read my book. #climatechange
(And the situation in Australia?… well… I await a review for EVEN JUST ONE of my books by a media outlet, kind or otherwise.)

Here’s an idea. (And, to be sure, I’m referring to handling the “hard” topics of the Middle East and the fracturing going on. And when I say “well”, I mean like a wise adult.)
I wrote a @substackinc post with three philosophical wisdoms for coping better with the Middle East crisis, from Keats, Erich Fromm and Alan Watts.

Ah shit, the porn issue. It’s bigger and deeper than how we are currently talking about it and it’s changed sex and relationships seismically. It’s also injuring men. I’m impacted and flummoxed by it and so I asked the super insightful Connor Beaton @mantalks to join me on WILD to talk me through his take on it as an ex-addict.
The US author and podcaster has coached thousands of men on “how to be good at being men” and also conducts porn detox programs. The masculinity crisis is a persistent theme here on Wild (and in the world). We also cover why boys flock to Andrew Tate, what women really mean when they say they want a man to be vulnerable and what happens in relationships when women earn more than the bloke. Connor challenges me a few times in this chat. I love it.

We need to think through the transgender kids debate. This week on Wild I chat with Hannah Barnes who is the BBC journalist who exposed the “Tavistock Clinic” scandal and has become the somewhat reluctant global voice on the raging child transgender debate.
In her award-winning BBC investigation, and in her new book, Time To Think: The Inside Story of the Collapse of the Tavistock’s Gender Service for Children, she investigates how the UK Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at Tavistock Clinic in London referred more than 1200 kids, some as young 9 years old for treatment to block puberty, largely in the absence of data and research about its safety and efficacy. Her research highlighted a whole range of complex issues about the wellbeing of teens, trans people and our culture broadly.
In this chat, Hannah and I cover how 35% of gender dysphoric teens are autistic, the massive uptick in kids identifying as trans worldwide (one study reports a 1000% increase in young people identifying as trans or nonbinary), and the important reasons why there are suddenly way more girls than boys wanting to transition.
