My childhood memories of my mother wearing a traditional saree during Diwali celebrations have inspired my work as a designer. The incorporation of silk traditional sarees and vintage jewelry in a contemporary format reflects a beautiful blend of heritage and modernity. Kolkata’s unique style statement adds an extra layer of regional charm to this classic attire.

Devi Chowdhurani – Decoding the look.. Chapter 1
Devi Chowdhurani:
Detailed research has gone into creating the looks of the film Devi Chowdhurani ( Bandit Queen of Bengal ) in an attempt to capture the era and the mood of the epic story with maximum authenticity.
Devi Chowdhurani, the bandit queen, wears a saree in shades of red and brown. She was inducted into the team of Sanyasi Bandits mentored by Bhavani Pathak who belonged to the Dashnami sect. As they worshipped Shiva and the Mother Goddess through occult, they must have primarily worn red robes and Rudraksha. The entire costume is hand woven and organically dyed. She wears her saree in such a way that would be easier for her to mount a horse or to jump. Women at that time did not wear any blouse, but as she is staying with a team of unknown men and she needed to fight, Devi Chowdhurani wears a cotton men’s Angrakha inside, probably part of an earlier loot by the team.
The Tilak on the forehead of Devi Chowdhurani consists of Haridra ( turmeric ), Swet Chandan ( white sandalwood paste )and Rakta Chandan ( red sandalwood paste ) in accordance to the tradition of this sect. As she is a Hindu married woman, the Snakha, Pola, Noa and Sindur adorns her person as signs of holy matrimony.
Devi Chowdhurani carries a tribal bow and arrows in a quiver, all made out of Bamboo and jute which were in abundance in Barendrabhum. She also carries a large Indian sword ( Talwar ) and two daggers, expectedly looted from an Indian Zamindar, though the shiny scabbards are covered in jute for camouflage.
On her feet, Devi Chowdhurani wears customized shoes and leg protectors made out of jute and tree barks. In that era, Hindu monks didn’t wear any shoes and women were forbidden to wear any footwear. But the Sannyasi Bandits needed to protect their feet during arduous treks through rough terrain and raids in the jungle and hills.
