But he’s invested in smaller forms of storytelling, too. ‘Spark’, an upcoming biopic set to be Mackie’s directorial debut, will tell the story of Claudette Colvin, an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus aged only 15. He sees the project as a chance to help address the ongoing shortage of roles deserving for young Black talent. “Harry Potter had no fucking Black friends,” Mackie says. “Frodo walked across the entire universe and never met a Black dude.
