Çağan Şekercioğlu Instagram – A greater flowerpiercer (Diglossa major) found only at elevations above 1000 m in the tepui highlands of Venezuela and Guyana, Flowerpiercers are named after the hook on their bill tip that enables them to make holes in the bases of a flowers to steal their nectar without pollinating them. A tepui is a table-top mountain or mesa found in South America, especially in Venezuela and western Guyana. The word tepui means “house of the gods” in the native tongue of the Pemon, the indigenous people who inhabit the region.
Sadece Venezuela ve Guyana’nın 1000 metre irtifa üzerindeki tepui ormanlarında bulunan bir büyük çiçekdelen (Diglossa major). Çiçekdelenlere böyle denmesinin sebebi, gagalarının ucundaki kancayla çiçeklerin dibini delip nektarlarını içmedeleridir. Çiçekler, tozlaştırıcıları çekmek için nektar ürettiklerinden ve çiçekdelenler polenlere bulaşmadan nektarı içtiklerinden, çiçekdelenler “nektar hırsızları” denen kuşlar arasındadır. Tepui, özellikle Venezuela ve Batı Guyana’da bulunan düz tepeli dağlara denir. Tepui kelimesi, bölgede yaşayan Pemonların dilinde “tanrıların evi” anlamına gelir.
