David Bowie Instagram – THANKS FOR NUMBER ONE DAVID
“Where have all the good times gone…” *
Having spent five weeks in the top slot upon release, fifty years ago this week Pin Ups dropped down to #2 in the UK album chart after being unseated by Roxy Music’s Stranded album.
Pin Ups spent 13 weeks in the top 10 and RCA marked its spell at #1 with a full-page advert in the UK music press, which we’ve reproduced here. We’ve also reproduced a similar ad from an American magazine.
The unusual 1973 live shot of David wearing shades was a pleasing sight, as it hadn’t been documented anywhere previously. As you know, Halloween Jack made the most of them the following year for Cracked Actor.
As we mentioned, Pin Ups entered the chart at #1 on the chart dated 28 October 1973 – 3 November 1973
Here are the positions taken from the following week’s chart:
#01 Pin Ups – #14 Aladdin Sane – #16 Hunky Dory – #22 Ziggy Stardust – #46 The Man Who Sold The World – #50 Space Oddity
That week, the man who released his debut RCA album just two years previously, had six albums in the Top Fifty. As far as we are aware, that’s a feat that hasn’t been equalled by a living artist since.
Bowie himself still holds the title for most simultaneous albums in the UK Top 100, when he held an incredible 19 places following his passing in 2016.
* Today’s lyric quotation is from The Kinks’ song of the same name written by Ray Davies. It was the only song on Pin Ups with its lyrics reproduced on an insert sheet in the LP. The success of Pin Ups triggered the rush rerelease of The Kinks’ version as an A-side following its original appearance as a B-side in 1965.
