Edgar Wright Instagram – Was thrilled to be at the London premiere of Michael Mann’s @ferrarithemovie on Monday. As a director, he has been a huge inspiration to me over the years, with his superhuman attention to detail and sleek, inventive shooting style. Any Mann film is going to be pushing the boundaries of what is possible on a technical level, and so, whenever he makes a film, I pay attention. I can’t be the only film director who has watched sections of ‘Heat’ obsessively to see how the hell the crew pulled it all off*.
His new film had another element that was of keen interest to me as it tells the story of Enzo Ferrari and him betting his company on the outcome of Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy. From a screenplay by the late Troy Kennedy Martin (writer of The Italian Job), it shows the deadly nature of the race in hair-raising detail. Not surprisingly, the driving scenes are intense, visceral, and thrillingly captured.
I was particularly interested to see these incredible sequences as three of my ‘Baby Driver’ team worked on the movie: stunt coordinator @rpnagle, camera operator Roberto De Angelis (pictured!), and first assistant camera E.J. Misisco. All three did an incredible job with the period racing scenes. At the afterparty, I had a TON of questions on how certain coverage was done. Needless to say, Team Ferrari outdid themselves.
Check out the film on the biggest and loudest screen you can when it opens later this month. Michael remains The Mann**.
*It would seem with great difficulty and hard work by all involved. But as Jon Bernthal said to me on the ‘Baby Driver’ set; “If this shit was easy, every asshole would do it.”
