Humza Yousaf Instagram – At #COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland became the first country in the Global North to commit funding to loss and damage. Since then, we’ve been urging other governments, other countries in the Global North, to do likewise. I’m so pleased that in the opening days of #COP28 there has been agreement to mobilise and capitalise a fund for loss and damage. Because ultimately this is an issue of justice. It’s a moral responsibility for countries in the Global North, those that have disproportionately caused the impacts of climate change, but it’s our friends in the Global South who are disproportionately impacted by it. We have a moral responsibility in the Global North to fund loss and damage. We’ll continue to make sure that when it comes to the operationalising of that fund, it’s done so with justice at its heart, not adding to the debt burden that already exists in the Global South.
