I want to be remembered (if there is such a memory) for the short time that I’ll be remembered by my family: that I loved hard; that I preferred them; and that I was selfless enough to let them go and live a life and not make them feel that they have to take care of me in return for my total adoration of them. There is no sacrifice. It’s an honor to parent a child. It’s hard and messy and challenges the self like no other action. But the reward is that child who might grow up and look at you in the eyes and say “I love you, Papa. You’re a great Papa.” Forget it. Done. Parenting is an honor, and it’s not for the fools who think that they are working so hard for their children’s future outside of simply being able to provide some basic opportunities for them. Parenting is a fiery, chaotic, sandbox based heaven. The feral soil of Scotland says so.
