Nirmal Purja Instagram – PROJECT 2024: A new Porters Lodge for the ‘Unsung Heroes of the Mountain’ In 2024 our flagship project will be a new Porter House at Lobuche – it will provide the porters, the unsung heroes of the mountain, a warm, safe, fit for purpose building that they can be proud of. These powerhouses of the mountain community, help carry food, oxygen, water and gear up and down the Big Mountain trails. When they can rest, they do so in a dilapidated and unsafe building. The design of the new Porter House acknowledges the heritage and history of the porters and sits comfortably within its unique environment. It will provide affordable accommodation and shared spaces for the porters and local community. It will also offer opportunities to generate income to sustain the building in the longer term. Tackling any new build is difficult, so building a porter house at 5000m with extremely limited access and adverse weather conditions will be challenging, some say impossible.
