Nirmal Purja Instagram – BIG MOUNTAINS NEED BIG ACTION. Today is International Mountain Day, a chance to make some noise and get the issues affecting the mountains and their communities in front of politicians and gamechangers.
Mountain ecosystems are hugely important for our home, the Earth. They are home to 15% of the world’s population, have half of all biodiversity hotspots and provide freshwater for life for half the world’s population. Mountains are also at risk from climate change, overexploitation and contamination. We all need to do our part and work together to protect our home. What happens in the mountains affects us all.
That is why my @eliteexped team use a solar power array to power base camp, and it’s why we have strict “clean as you go” and “leave no trace protocols” for our expeds. I live on the mountains for 11 months of the year and I have seen the impact of climate change on the mountains first hand – glaciers turning into lakes within 10 years. This has a huge impact downstream – we need to act now and act together.
Our last two @nimsdai_foundation Big Mountain Clean Up’s on Everest and K2 removed a total of 1,124 kgs of waste. To put this into context this is equivalent to the waste generated by three UK households each year. We can make a difference if we work together. Next year we are returning to clean in the ‘Death Zone’ of Everest – you can find out more and donate to help us on the link in my bio.
